Sunaina's Spot

March 25, 2011
March madness not only consists of NCAA basketball, but also Western Canada Fashion Week and of course THE SPRING COLLECTION is out!! Woo!

However, March 11, 2011 was the day the earth shook. Japan’s tsunami was one of the most recorded disasters ever to be captured. My heart goes out to the victims in Japan. I decided to dedicate this blog to the women of Japan.

Fashion of Japan is known worldwide for setting the trends of cutting-edge style. Hot spots like Harajuko are famous for their lively Japanese street fashion culture. Not only is it a snapshot of how the stylish are driving the Japanese fashion industry but its' the place to spot outgoing innovative style, such as the Harajuku girls who are well known for their colorful cutting-edge look. Some of you may have heard of Harajuku, but may not know much about it. Harajuku style is a type of Japanese fashion adopted by the teenagers and young adults in the area, and it's side streets which have many boutiques, trendy stores and used clothes shops. Japanese Harajuku Girls and Harajuku Style has been used to describe teens dressed in many styles ranging from Gothic Lolita, Ganguro, Gyaru, Kogal, to "cute" Kawaii style clothing.

Remember Gwen Stefani and the Harajuko Girls?

Absolutely love this picture! Each one of them has something unique about their style.

This nation may have not have the big name designers, but when it comes to the youth and young dressing – their street says it all. No wonder Japanese youth fashion is considered trend setting in the world.

"The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you've had."
~Author Unknown

Valentine's day- a day you dedicate to your love or your crush or what not! I'm going to dedicate this to my partner in crime.

Divya and I have been best friends since grade 8, and it all started with a secret about a boy! Go figure! Ever since that day – we’ve been inseparable. We've been through it all, even when it comes to fashion – we went from wearing sweat pants everyday to barely owning a pair. I recall the days when we would to dress up for school.  This would sometimes mean invading our sisters' closets, stealing the item we wanted to wear and making sure to put it right back where we found it! Anything to look good, right?

We aren’t always the best influences for each other either when it comes to shopping.  Both of us are currently not working – and should be saving as much money as possible but nope...Divya has rent to pay – yet believes, rent can wait, a new pair of shoes are necessary! We were destined to be BFF's!  What would I do without you Divya?!

Jewelry and women go hand in hand. For those who know me well, you know my addiction to jewelry. Jewelry is an excellent gift for someone you love. Boys – like the famous quote says, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, don't ever forget it! For Valentine's Day, Divya and I decided to get friendship bracelets- not only are they fashionable but they also have a great meaning behind them.  Friendship bracelets are one of the leading symbols of friendship.  We got ones that say “Best Friends since 2001”, from Urban Outfitters.

Links of London also has great friendship bracelets.  These come in all colours!!

My favourite!!

That's all for now,

Xoxo Sunaina!

I Pay Close Attention To My Lipstick...

“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick – ass red lipstick."

Gwyneth Paltrow

Lipstick has been around forever, and has always been a timeless fashion statement. I can recall memories of watching my sister apply her make-up and as soon as she would leave, I would apply her powder, put some blush on and smear her favorite dark brown lipstick on my lips ( ladies from early 90’s – you know what I’m talking about), and of course pucker up like a movie star!

It's amazing how lipstick has always been “in”, never going out of style; it’s one item I feel could make an entire outfit. My best friend, Ranu, swears by it and cannot live without lipstick – I love it, she looks fabulous even going to the gym! Now I realize exactly what women mean when they say they feel naked without lipstick!

I have five favorite colors that I feel could be worn on a daily basis, or even  just to spice up your outfit for a night out. I’ll share my top three.

Light pink –  goes super well with smokey eyes, or with a subtle neutral color.
Personally, I think it is perfect to wear on a first date.

Red – There are so many shades of red you could choose from – dark, maroon, matte, or glossy red, the list goes on. I love wearing red, it can be worn with your hair in a loose bun, sweater and tights or nice short black dress.

Nude – I love wearing nude with smokey eyes. Kim Kardashian is the Queen of pulling off nude lips.  My favorite is M.A.C.’s Cherish – satin.

I have a few tips which have helped me out when it comes to having the perfect kissable lips:

1. Lipstick will last longer if you fill in your lips with the liner first.  Make sure your liner matches your lipstick

2. One thing I cannot stand, is when women have lipstick on their teeth! Here’s a trick I learned in a makeup course I took – take your index finder and pop it into your mouth, then pull it out. The excess lipstick will come onto your finger!

3. Take a risk – a lot of girls feel that they can’t pull certain colors off, or that they look like a clown. Wear it around the house for a bit, and steal glimpses of yourself in the mirror periodically and it'll not only start growing on you, you might even start loving it!!
