First ladies are typically seen as exemplary women, portraying, or at least trying to portray, what it means to be a beautiful, sophisticated, diplomatic and intelligent woman. Some of history's most beloved first ladies exude these qualities effortlessly, while remaining personable and relatable to the average woman. First lady style is often conservative and neat, however, popular and well admired first ladies such as Michelle Obama and Jackie Kennedy, have been able balance both conservatism and fashion forward looks into their wardrobe.
