Sisters Marina Shih, Celina Shih and Tina Shih realized their dream of owning a fresh and contemporary boutique when they opened Shades of Grey seven months ago. Largely influenced by the light and clean style of Los Angeles based retailers, Shades of Grey is an unencumbered sophisticated space. Upon entering the store, it becomes evident how much hard work goes into the fine details that make Shades of Grey so beautiful. The Shih sisters have a discerning eye for what fits into their vision for the store. Each bracelet, blouse and shoe is displayed artfully and with great care. Carrying labels such as Anlo, Yumi Kim, Cynthia Vincent, Society for Rational Dress, Wren, Domino, J Brand, Black Orchid, Hobo International and L.A. Made, one can typically find unique pieces from designers that aren't heavily stocked in other Edmonton boutiques.
The refined nature of the store has attracted an older cosmopolitan clientele, however, Shades of Grey frequently feature in-store student discounts and are looking to draw in a younger demographic as well. After having surveyed their collections this is completely warranted. Not only do they carry delicate formal frocks, but also casual pieces and loungewear; really highlighting that their clothing isn't specifically targeted or restricted to one age group, but for women at various stages in their lives. Whether it be a study date, business meeting or 5-à-7 drinks, Shades of Grey has something for everyone.
This blue jewel-toned dress by Anlo caught my eye almost immediately upon entering the store. Cute and romantic. The killer suede and studded booties are from Dolce Vita, a line from which Shades of Grey carries quite a few different styles. I am also wearing two necklaces from Chloe. I could totally see myself biking leisurely along The Seine in this dress (perhaps not in the high-heels though!)
Row is an absolute stunner in this dress by Society for Rational Dress (love that name). The draped neck-line and shimmering contrast of the fabric add to the elegant simplistic nature of this piece. The Chloe chain-link bracelet was a seamless match for this outfit. The shoes, also by Dolce Vita were so intriguing in that they weren't your average pump; more of an amalgamation of a typical suede pump, a wedge and a platform!
I love the sense of balance that this outfit achieves. Due to the sequined pocket and crisscross draping in the back, this tank top by Something Else, can be interpreted in a casual or eveningwear fashion.
This outfit is smartly adorned with dainty jewelry and shoes that pop! Chloe is noted for their intricate and delicate jewelry designs and this necklace is a testament to that. The Cynthia Vincent shoes bring this look into an eveningwear appropriate style and the shiny embellishments really play up the shimmer of the pocket.
